Through Christ, we are no longer slaves to sin, nor do we stand condemned before God. But Christian freedom is often misunderstood. Freedom in Christ does not mean that we can simply do whatever we want. Biblical freedom is freedom from sin’s control so that we can live for God and serve others.

1. Christian freedom is freedom from sin’s dominion and condemnation.

Before coming to Christ, people are under the power of sin. Sin controls our desires and separates us from God. But Jesus came to set us free.

Romans 6:14 says:

“For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.”

And Romans 8:1 tells us:

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.”

The Christian is no longer a slave who must obey sin. We have been forgiven and brought into a new relationship with God. Freedom begins with what Christ has already done for us.

2. Freedom is not permission to indulge selfish desires.

Christian liberty does not mean, “I am free, therefore I can do whatever I want.”

Paul warns us in Galatians 5:13:

“Only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh.”

The flesh wants to turn freedom into self-indulgence. But Christ did not free us so that we could become better servants of ourselves. He freed us so that we could become servants of God.

Freedom from sin does not mean freedom to sin.

3. Christian liberty must be governed by love.

Paul continues in Galatians 5:13:

“But by love serve one another.”

Love changes the way we use our freedom. Instead of asking only, “Am I allowed to do this?”, we should also ask, “Will this help or harm others?” We need to remember that in essence there are only 2 Commandments. Love God with all your heart, and love your neighbor. If an action violates any of these, we are not following God’s commands.

Christian liberty is not centered on my rights. It considers the spiritual well-being of those around me.

Paul expresses this principle in 1 Corinthians 10:23:

“All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient.”

Our freedom should be controlled by love rather than selfishness.

4. Something may be permissible but still spiritually unwise.

Not everything that is technically permissible is beneficial.

Paul says in 1 Corinthians 6:12:

“All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient.”

There are choices that may not be sinful in themselves but may nevertheless be unwise because they can control us, weaken our testimony, harm another believer, or distract us from our relationship with God.

A mature Christian learns to ask more than, “Is this a sin?”

We should also ask:

Is this helping me grow spiritually?

Could this become a source of bondage?

Could this influence someone else toward sin?

Does this strengthen or weaken my testimony?

Is this the loving thing to do?

Wisdom sometimes means voluntarily giving up something we have the freedom to do.

5. True freedom enables us to serve others rather than ourselves.

The world often defines freedom as having no one to serve and no one to tell us what to do. Scripture gives us a very different picture.

Jesus said:

“For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister.”

— Mark 10:45

Christ’s freedom was demonstrated through service and sacrifice.

When we understand Christian liberty correctly, our question changes from “What can I get away with?” to “How can I use my freedom to help someone else?”

That is genuine Christian freedom. We are free from sin’s dominion, free from condemnation, and free from the need to live for ourselves. We are free to love God, love others, and serve them.

Reflection

Christian freedom is not the freedom to live selfishly. It is the freedom to live righteously and lovingly.

Today, consider one area of your life where you have been asking, “Is this allowed?” Ask instead, “How can I use my freedom in a way that honors Christ and benefits others?”

Prayer

Father, thank You for the freedom You have given me through Jesus Christ. Thank You that I am no longer under sin’s dominion and that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ. Help me not to use my freedom selfishly. Give me wisdom to recognize what is spiritually beneficial and what is not. Teach me to govern my liberty by love and to use the freedom You have given me to serve others. May my life bring honor to Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Discussion Questions:

What is the difference between freedom and license?

Why should love influence our personal choices?

Can something be lawful but still unhelpful spiritually?

Practical Application:

Examine whether one personal freedom has become more important than loving others.

Use your freedom this week to serve someone.

Key Scriptures: Galatians 5:1, 13-14, 1 Corinthians 6:12 Teaching Points: Christian Freedom: Free to Serve Key Scripture: “For you, brethren, have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for […]

"slide_template_v7":"
["post-2062","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry

<meta name="description" content="Key Scriptures: Galatians 5:1, 13-14, 1 Corinthians 6:12 Teaching Points: Christian Freedom: Free to Serve Key Scripture: “For you, brethren, have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.” — Galatians 5:13 Christian freedom is one of the great blessings of salvation.
