Jesus gave His disciples a very different definition of greatness. In His kingdom, greatness is measured not by how many people serve us, but by how faithfully we serve others.

Christian leadership is therefore not primarily about being seen, having authority, or building a reputation. It is about following Christ by seeking the spiritual good of others.

1. Jesus Defined Greatness Through Humble Service

Jesus told His disciples that whoever wanted to be great must become a servant. He Himself demonstrated this perfectly.

Jesus had the greatest position of all, yet He humbled Himself and served others. His leadership was not self-centered. He used His position to bless, teach, heal, and ultimately give His life for others.

Application:

Ask yourself, “How can I serve the people God has placed around me?” True Christian greatness begins when we stop asking what others can do for us and begin asking what we can do for them.

2. Biblical Leadership Seeks the Spiritual Good of Others

Christian leadership is a responsibility, not merely a privilege. A biblical leader seeks to help others know Christ, grow in faith, understand Scripture, and become spiritually mature.

Paul told the Ephesian elders that he had faithfully taught them and warned them, because their spiritual welfare mattered to him (Acts 20:27–28).

A leader’s question should not simply be, “Are people following me?” but rather, “Are the people I lead growing closer to Christ?”

3. Authority Should Never Become a Means of Personal Exaltation

Authority can easily become dangerous when it feeds pride. A leader may begin by serving Christ but gradually become concerned with recognition, control, or personal importance.

Jesus warned His disciples not to imitate worldly rulers who “lord it over” others (Mark 10:42–43).

Christian authority should point people toward Christ, not toward the leader.

Application:

When you receive recognition, authority, or influence, remember that these are gifts entrusted to you by God. They are opportunities for service, not reasons for self-exaltation.

4. Christian Leaders Ultimately Answer to Christ

Every Christian leader is accountable to Jesus Christ. People may praise us or criticize us, but Christ is the ultimate Judge of our faithfulness.

Paul wrote, “It is required of stewards that they be found faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:2).

This gives both humility and confidence. We do not need to live for the approval of people. Our responsibility is to remain faithful to Christ and His Word.

Application:

Ask, “If Christ examined my leadership today, would He find faithfulness, humility, and love?”

5. Character Is More Important Than Visibility or Reputation

A person can have an impressive public reputation while lacking godly character. Christian leadership cannot be measured merely by how visible someone is or how many people know their name.

God looks at the heart.

Character includes humility, integrity, faithfulness, patience, love, self-control, and obedience to God’s Word. These qualities may receive little public attention, but they are precious to God.

Application:

Do not focus primarily on being noticed. Focus on being faithful. Reputation is what others think about us; character is who we actually are before God.

Conclusion

Jesus completely changed the world’s definition of greatness.

True Christian greatness is not found in position but in service, not in power but in humility, and not in reputation but in character.

A faithful Christian leader:

Serves rather than seeks status.

Seeks the spiritual good of others.

Uses authority without pride.

Remembers that Christ is the ultimate Judge.

Values character more than recognition.

The greatest example is Jesus Himself. He did not come to be served, but to serve and to give His life for others (Mark 10:45).

Reflection:

Am I seeking to be recognized as a great leader, or am I seeking to faithfully serve Christ and the people He has entrusted to me?

Discussion Questions:

How did Jesus redefine greatness?

Why is humility essential to Christian leadership?

What happens when leadership becomes focused on recognition?

Practical Application:

Perform an act of service that nobody is likely to notice.

Ask whether your leadership points people toward Christ or toward yourself.

Supporter Nathan S HE REC 30

Key Scriptures: Mark 10:42-45, John 13:1-17, 1 Peter 5:2-4 Teaching Points: True Greatness in Christian Leadership Scripture: Mark 10:43–45 “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” […]

"slide_template_v7":"
["post-2076","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry

<meta name="description" content="Key Scriptures: Mark 10:42-45, John 13:1-17, 1 Peter 5:2-4 Teaching Points: True Greatness in Christian Leadership Scripture: Mark 10:43–45 “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” Introduction The world often defines greatness by position, influence, recognition, and power.
