God\u2019s Justice and Mercy at the Cross<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Scripture:<\/strong>
\u201cFor all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.\u201d \u2014 Romans 3:23\u201324<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God\u2019s Love Does Not Mean That He Overlooks Sin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

God is loving, but His love does not cause Him to ignore sin. Because God is holy and righteous, He cannot simply declare that sin does not matter. Sin is rebellion against the character and authority of God, and therefore it must be dealt with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes people think that because God loves us, He will overlook our wrongdoing. But the Bible presents a different picture. God\u2019s love does not make sin less serious. Instead, His love provided a way for sinners to be forgiven without compromising His holiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God\u2019s Righteous Character Requires That Sin Be Judged<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

God is perfectly righteous and just. He always does what is right. Because of this, sin must receive judgment. God cannot be unjust in order to be merciful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Romans 6:23 says, \u201cFor the wages of sin is death.\u201d<\/strong> Sin has a consequence, and God’s righteousness requires that the penalty be paid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is why our salvation is such a great miracle. God did not simply cancel our guilt as though our sin did not matter. He dealt with our guilt according to His justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christ Willingly Bore the Judgment Deserved by Sinners<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The wonderful truth of the gospel is that Jesus Christ took upon Himself the judgment that sinners deserved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Isaiah 53:5 says, \u201cBut he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jesus was not forced to the cross against His will. He willingly gave Himself for us. He took our place and bore the penalty of our sin so that we could receive forgiveness and reconciliation with God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cross shows us both how serious our sin is and how great Christ’s love is. Our sin was so serious that Christ had to die for it, yet His love was so great that He willingly died for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Cross, God\u2019s Justice and Mercy Meet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the cross, God’s justice was satisfied and God’s mercy was extended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

God did not ignore sin. He judged sin in Christ.<\/strong> The penalty was paid, but God provided another to bear that penalty in our place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Romans 3:26 explains that God is \u201cjust, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.\u201d<\/strong> God remains just while justifying the sinner who trusts in Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the glory of the gospel. God does not have to choose between being just and being merciful. At the cross, we see both perfectly displayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cross Demonstrates the Seriousness of Sin and the Greatness of God\u2019s Grace<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When we look at the cross, we should never think lightly about sin. The suffering and death of Christ demonstrate the terrible seriousness of our rebellion against God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the cross also causes us to marvel at grace. We did not deserve Christ’s sacrifice. We could not earn forgiveness. Yet God provided salvation through His Son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cross therefore produces both humility and gratitude<\/strong>. We should hate the sin that required such a sacrifice while rejoicing in the Savior who willingly made it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Application<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When you are tempted to treat sin lightly, look to the cross. It reminds you that sin is serious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you feel that your sin is too great to be forgiven, look to the cross. It reminds you that God’s grace is greater than your sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you wonder whether God truly loves you, look to the cross. Christ’s willingness to bear your judgment is unmistakable evidence of God’s love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cross tells us that sin is serious, God is just, Christ is sufficient, and grace is amazing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prayer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Father, thank You that You are perfectly holy and just, yet wonderfully merciful. Thank You that You did not overlook our sin but provided Your Son to bear its judgment in our place. Help us to understand the seriousness of sin and to appreciate more deeply the greatness of Your grace. May the cross produce in us repentance, humility, gratitude, and greater love for Christ. In Jesus\u2019 name, Amen.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
