Lesson 69: The Return of Christ
Key Scriptures: Matthew 24:42–44, Titus 2:13
Teaching Points:
Living in Light of Christ’s Return
Scripture: “Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” — Matthew 24:44 (ESV)
One of the great promises of Scripture is that Jesus Christ will return. Before ascending into heaven, He assured His disciples that He would come again and receive His people to Himself (John 14:3). Just as God has faithfully fulfilled every promise concerning Christ’s first coming, we can trust Him to fulfill His promise of Christ’s return.
Because Christ is coming again, believers are called to live watchfully and faithfully. Jesus repeatedly urged His followers to be alert, not becoming spiritually complacent or distracted by the cares of this world. Watchfulness involves maintaining a vibrant relationship with the Lord through prayer, obedience, and devotion to His Word. Faithfulness means continuing to serve Him diligently, using the gifts and opportunities He has entrusted to us for His glory.
The certainty of Christ’s return also inspires holy living. Knowing that we may see our Savior at any moment should motivate us to pursue purity, godliness, and faithful service. Rather than producing fear, the hope of His return fills believers with joy and anticipation. We long for the day when faith becomes sight and we will be with Him forever.
May we live each day with our eyes fixed on Christ, faithfully serving Him until He comes.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for the promise that Jesus will return. Help us to remain watchful, faithful, and devoted to You. May the hope of His coming encourage us to live holy lives that honor You each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
