Lesson 55: Walking in the Spirit

Key Scriptures: Galatians 5:16–17, Romans 8:14

Teaching Points:

Walking in the Spirit

Scripture Focus:
“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” — Galatians 5:16

Devotional Thought

The Christian life is not meant to be lived through human strength alone. God gives believers His Spirit to guide, strengthen, and shape their lives toward holiness and godly living. The Spirit does more than comfort us—He leads us. His guidance affects our thoughts, decisions, attitudes, and actions.

Yet walking in the Spirit requires surrender. Surrender means allowing God’s direction to take priority over our own impulses and desires. It involves listening to His voice through Scripture, prayer, and conviction, even when His leading challenges our personal preferences. Surrender is not weakness; it is trusting that God’s way leads to life and peace.

Spiritual growth also involves resisting fleshly desires. The “flesh” refers to those sinful tendencies that pull us away from God—selfishness, pride, anger, impurity, and other attitudes that oppose His will. Growth does not mean believers never struggle; it means they increasingly choose obedience over sinful impulses. Each act of resistance and each step of obedience strengthens spiritual maturity.

Walking in the Spirit is a daily journey. As believers surrender to God and resist what draws them away from Him, the Spirit produces godly character and lasting transformation.
