Lesson 57: The Cost of Discipleship

Key Scriptures: Luke 9:23, Philippians 3:7–8

Teaching Points:

A Basic Devotional: Faithfulness, Scripture, and Unity in the Church

Key Theme: Letting God’s Word shape our convictions while walking in humility and love toward one another.

The church is called to be a community that is centered on Christ and guided by Scripture. In times of discussion or disagreement, believers are invited to return to a simple but weighty question: What has God said, and how should we respond in obedience?

The New Testament encourages believers to take Scripture seriously as the foundation for faith and practice. At the same time, it also calls the church to pursue unity, humility, and love in how we handle differences. Even when sincere believers interpret certain passages differently, the shared goal remains the same: honoring God in both truth and conduct.

There are moments when churches must discern how to apply biblical teaching in real situations of leadership, teaching, and order. These discussions can be challenging, especially when gifted individuals are involved and when convictions are deeply held. In such moments, wisdom is needed—not only to seek clarity from Scripture, but also to preserve the peace and unity of the body of Christ.

God also calls His people to value the gifts He has given within the church. Teaching, encouragement, testimony, and service all play important roles in building up believers. Scripture consistently affirms that every member of the body has a purpose and contribution, even as churches seek to remain faithful to their understanding of biblical structure and authority.

When disagreements arise, the posture of the believer should be prayerful and humble. Rather than reacting in haste, we are called to seek the Lord together, listen carefully to one another, and ask for wisdom from above. God is not honored by division, but by a church that strives to remain both faithful to truth and loving in spirit.

Prayer:
Lord, give us wisdom to understand Your Word rightly. Help us to walk in humility when we disagree, and to pursue unity without compromising obedience. Teach us to honor You in both truth and love, so that Your church may reflect the character of Christ. Amen.

Discussion Questions:

  • What sacrifices come with following Christ?
  • Why do many resist full surrender?
  • What does taking up your cross mean today?

Practical Application:
Surrender one area you’ve been holding back from God.
