The Importance of Humility

Lesson 26: The Importance of Humility

Key Scriptures: James 4:6, Philippians 2:3-4, 1 Peter 5:6

Teaching Points:

The Beauty of Humility

“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Pride elevates self and resists God, but humility opens the door to His grace. When we cling to our own importance, we distance ourselves from the very help we need. But when we humble ourselves—acknowledging our need for God—we position our hearts to receive His favor, strength, and guidance.

“Humility is putting others before yourself.”

Humility is not thinking less of yourself—it’s thinking of yourself less. It’s choosing to serve rather than be served, to listen rather than insist, and to lift others up instead of seeking recognition. In a world that pushes self-promotion, humility reflects the heart of God in a powerful and quiet way.

“Jesus is our greatest example of humility.”

Jesus, though fully God, chose to lower Himself by becoming a man—serving others perfectly, loving sacrificially, and ultimately giving His life to pay for their sins. He did not cling to status or demand recognition. Instead, He showed us that true greatness is found in surrender and service. When we follow His example, we begin to reflect His character in our everyday lives.

Today, choose humility. Lay down pride, serve someone else, and trust that God sees and honors a humble heart.

Reflection:
Where might pride be influencing your attitude or actions?

Prayer:
Lord, help me to walk in humility. Teach me to put others before myself and to follow the example of Jesus. Remove pride from my heart and fill me with Your grace. Amen.
