Lesson 81: Developing Spiritual Discernment
Key Scriptures: 1 John 4:1, Hebrews 5:14, Philippians 1:9–10
Teaching Points
1. Discernment Is the Ability to Recognize Truth
Discernment is more than knowledge. It is the God-given ability to distinguish between truth and error, right and wrong, and wisdom and foolishness. Many things in life are not obviously sinful, yet they may not be beneficial. Mature believers learn to evaluate everything through the lens of Scripture.
2. Discernment Develops Through Spiritual Maturity
Discernment is not automatic. Hebrews 5:14 teaches that mature believers have their senses trained through constant practice. As we study God’s Word and apply it to daily life, our ability to recognize truth grows stronger.
3. Every Teaching Must Be Tested
Not every spiritual message comes from God. Christians are commanded to test teachings, philosophies, and spiritual claims against Scripture. The Bible is the final authority for faith and practice.
4. Discernment Protects Against Deception
False teaching often contains a mixture of truth and error. Satan frequently disguises deception in attractive packaging. Discernment helps believers avoid being led astray by popular opinions, cultural pressures, or misleading spiritual influences.
5. Discernment Helps Us Make Wise Decisions
Many decisions involve choosing between good, better, and best. Discernment allows believers to seek God’s wisdom and make choices that honor Him.
Discussion Questions
- What is the difference between knowledge and discernment?
- Why do you think some believers are easily deceived by false teaching?
- How can Scripture help us evaluate what we hear?
- What areas of life require greater discernment today?
- How does spiritual maturity strengthen discernment?
Practical Application
Daily Scripture Evaluation
This week, when you hear a sermon, podcast, social media post, or advice from someone else, ask:
- Does this agree with Scripture?
- Does it glorify Christ?
- Does it promote obedience to God’s Word?
- Does it reflect biblical wisdom?
Write down one example and evaluate it using these questions.
Memory Verse
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.” — 1 John 4:1
Further Study
- Acts 17:11 — The Bereans examined the Scriptures daily.
- Proverbs 14:15 — The simple believe everything; the prudent examine carefully.
- Colossians 2:8 — Beware of philosophies that are not according to Christ.
- James 1:5 — God gives wisdom to those who ask.
Application
Spend time each day reading Scripture and asking God for wisdom. Before accepting any teaching, opinion, or trend, compare it with God’s Word. Ask the Holy Spirit to develop a discerning heart that loves truth and rejects error.
This lesson works particularly well as a bridge into Lesson 82 (Walking in Biblical Wisdom) because discernment helps us recognize truth, while wisdom helps us apply truth correctly.
