Lesson 115: The Church as Christ’s Body

Key Scriptures: 1 Corinthians 12:12-27, Ephesians 4:11-16

Teaching Points:

  • Here is a simple devotional built around those five statements, with 1 Corinthians 12 as the central passage.
  • The Church: The Body of Christ
  • Scripture:
  • “Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.”
  • — 1 Corinthians 12:27
  • The Church Is More Than a Weekly Gathering
  • The church is not simply a group of people who meet together once a week. The church is the body of Christ. Every believer is part of that body, and Christ is the head.
  • When we understand the church this way, our attitude toward church changes. We are not merely attending a service—we are part of a spiritual family in which every member has a purpose.
  • Every Believer Has a Role
  • God has given every believer a place and a responsibility within the body. First Corinthians 12:18 says, “But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.”
  • Not everyone has the same role, and that is intentional. Just as the human body has many different parts that perform different functions, the church needs believers serving in different ways.
  • Your role may not be highly visible, but that does not make it unimportant. God knows how He wants to use each member of His body.
  • Gifts Are for Service, Not Status
  • Spiritual gifts are not given so that believers can gain recognition or feel superior to others. They are given so that we can serve Christ and serve one another.
  • The question is not, “What gift do I have that will make me important?” but, “How can God use what He has given me to help others?”
  • A gift becomes meaningful when it is used in love and service.
  • We Need One Another
  • God never intended Christians to live the Christian life completely independently. We need one another for encouragement, instruction, correction, prayer, fellowship, and spiritual growth.
  • Just as an eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of thee” (1 Corinthians 12:21), Christians should not think they can live effectively without the rest of the body.
  • Sometimes God uses another believer to strengthen us when we are weak. At other times, He uses us to strengthen someone else.
  • A Healthy Church Uses Its Gifts
  • A healthy church is not simply a church with many people attending. It is a church in which believers are faithfully using what God has given them to serve Christ and one another.
  • When each member does his or her part, the entire body benefits.
  • The goal is not to be noticed. The goal is to be useful.
  • Application
  • Ask yourself:
  • Am I viewing the church as the body of Christ or simply as a weekly meeting?
  • How has God equipped me to serve others?
  • Am I using my abilities and spiritual gifts for service rather than recognition?
  • Am I allowing other believers to encourage and help me grow?
  • Is there a way I can become more faithful in serving the body of Christ?
  • Prayer
  • Lord, thank You for making me part of the body of Christ. Help me understand the role You have given me and faithfully use what You have entrusted to me. Keep me from seeking recognition or status. Give me a heart that wants to serve others, encourage other believers, and help build up Your church. Amen.
