Passing Our Faith to the Next Generation

Scripture
“We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.”
— Psalm 78:4
Our faith is not meant to stop with us. God desires that we tell the next generation about who He is, what He has done, and how He has been faithful.
1. Faith Should Be Passed to Future Generations
Psalm 78 gives us a clear responsibility: we are to tell our children and grandchildren about God.
We should not assume that the next generation will somehow discover the faith on their own. They need to hear the truth of Scripture. They need to see the importance of prayer. They need to hear testimonies of God’s faithfulness.
Deuteronomy 6:6–7 says:
“And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children.”
Faith is passed on through teaching, conversation, example, and daily living.
2. A Godly Life Leaves a Lasting Influence
Our influence is often greater than we realize.
People may forget many of the things we say, but they often remember how we lived. Children and grandchildren notice whether our faith is genuine. They see whether we trust God when circumstances are difficult. They see whether we forgive, serve, pray, and remain faithful.
Proverbs 20:7 says:
“The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.”
A godly life can influence generations that we may never personally see.
We may never know all the lives that are affected by our faithfulness. A prayer, a Scripture verse, a godly decision, or an example of perseverance may become something another person carries with them for the rest of their life.
3. Legacy Is Built Through Consistent Faithfulness
A spiritual legacy is usually not built through one great accomplishment. It is built through years of ordinary faithfulness.
It is getting up each morning and seeking God.
It is being faithful to God’s Word.
It is loving your family.
It is serving the church.
It is praying for others.
It is remaining faithful when nobody is watching.
Paul told Timothy:
“The things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.”
— 2 Timothy 2:2
Notice the progression: Paul → Timothy → faithful men → others.
That is the power of a spiritual legacy. One faithful life can influence another, who influences another, who influences another.
Application
Ask yourself three questions:
- What am I intentionally passing on to the next generation?
- What does my daily life teach others about my faith?
- If someone followed my example, would it lead them closer to Christ?
We cannot control what future generations will do, but we can be faithful with what God has entrusted to us today.
Our goal should not simply be to leave behind possessions, accomplishments, or a good reputation. We should desire to leave behind a testimony of faithfulness to God.
Conclusion
One day, our earthly lives will come to an end. But the influence of our faith can continue.

Let us live in such a way that those who come after us can say, “They were faithful to God, and they taught us to be faithful too.”

Help us to live godly lives that influence our children, grandchildren, and those around us. May the legacy we leave behind point people not to ourselves, but to Jesus Christ. Amen.
