The Holiness of God
Scripture Reading: Isaiah 6:1–8
God’s holiness means that He is completely pure, righteous, and morally perfect. There is no sin, corruption, or evil in God. He is utterly different from everything that is sinful and impure. The angels in Isaiah’s vision cried out, “Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts” (Isaiah 6:3). God’s holiness is not merely one of His characteristics—it is central to who He is.
God’s holiness also reveals the seriousness of human sin. When Isaiah saw the glory and holiness of God, he did not congratulate himself on being a good man. Instead, he cried, “Woe is me! for I am undone” (Isaiah 6:5). In the presence of God’s perfect holiness, Isaiah recognized his own sinfulness. God’s holiness shows us that sin is not a small matter. It is rebellion against a perfectly holy God.
Isaiah’s encounter with God’s holiness produced humility and repentance. He confessed his uncleanness and acknowledged that he lived among a people who were also unclean. When we truly understand who God is, we should become less impressed with ourselves and more aware of our need for His mercy. God’s holiness should lead us to confess our sins rather than excuse them.
Yet the good news is that through Christ, sinners can approach a holy God. Isaiah’s guilt was taken away when the seraph touched his lips with a burning coal from the altar. In an even greater way, Christ has provided the sacrifice for our sins. Through His death and resurrection, those who trust in Him are forgiven and counted righteous before God. We do not approach God because we are holy in ourselves, but because Christ has made the way for us.
Understanding God’s holiness should deepen both our reverence and our worship. We should never treat God casually or lightly. He is the holy Creator who deserves our awe, obedience, gratitude, and praise. At the same time, His holiness should make the grace we have received through Christ even more precious.

Do I have a proper view of God’s holiness? When I see His holiness, do I respond with humility, repentance, reverence, and worship?
Prayer:
Holy God, help me to understand more clearly Your perfect holiness and the seriousness of my sin. Give me a humble and repentant heart. Thank You for providing a way for sinners to approach You through Jesus Christ. Help me never to take Your grace for granted, but to live each day with reverence, gratitude, obedience, and worship. Amen.
